On January 29, 2007, John Bowman was arrested, to face indictment in a bank fraud case. According to the indictment, a Bank of America vice president received bribes of several thousand dollars, and accepted fraudulent loan applications. The first count which included Bowman indicates that he obtained a fraudulent credit card, and took a $4,050 cash advance.

Bowman then used a fraudulently obtained Visa card to make other purchases.

Later, in a plea deal, Bowman pleaded guilty to one count of bribery of a bank official.

He was sentenced to five years of probation, and ordered to make restitution of about $20,000. He resigned from the house on January 31, 2008.
